Salmo Pike
In my opinion, this is Salmo's shining star of
tackle. The Pike is so lifelike in detail, (and SO cute!) you kinda hate to throw the
little guy out to the wolves. On the flipside, everybody (meaning other fish) hates
northerns, and if they get the opportunity grind up and swallow a baby northern, they're going
to do it. We've had our clients catch 12 lb. walleyes by trolling these pike around
reefs and drop offs. Take the smaller sizes in non-jointed Pike and put a couple of #4
split shots about 12-14" in front of it. Get it down near the bottom and troll slowly.
Remember, it's not live bait, so the minute you get a hit, you set the hook! You'll
rarely get a second chance unless it's a marauding northern. I swear they attack just
because they've got a mean streak.
Use the bigger sizes with heavier rods for
lunker northerns up here and muskies in muskie waters elsewhere.
NOTE to you southern guys coming up to fish in
the Boundary Waters: Do not "lip" northerns or walleyes. Use a landing net or be
prepared to get out the bandaids, whiskey and a bullet to bite on as your buddy stitches you
up.
