NEW! Arctic Armor Outdoor Gear!

WOW! Yet another extreme weather suit for everything from snowmobiling to ice fishing to search & rescue. We now sell several different suits and they all seem to serve great purposes for LOTS of ice fisherman because that is where they got their roots. Imagine yourself standing on an open tundra in -20 below with 30 MPH winds whipping snow and nothing to hide behind. That's where ice fishing clothing came from because crazy icefisherman do that all the time. It's what we do.
The someone decided to promote this excellent outdoor clothing for all sorts of folks who don't ice fish but have the honor and priviledge of having to be out in rugged conditions. Guess what? This outdoor clothing is great for all sorts of uses, but some of it is a little on the bulky side. So if you are planning to or do other activities other than riding on or sitting in something, not all of the brands are created equal.
Enter Arctic Armor by i.d.i. gear. This stuff looks similar but acts differently than all the other suits. First off, it's less bulky because i.d.i. gear used the proprietary insulation called Insultex. Insultex appears to be a very intriguing insulation. They say that one layer (.5 millimeter - that's milli - meter - itty bitty thickness here) will protect it's wearer down to -0 degrees F. Well, in Arctic Armor, they have 4 layers of Insultex in everything along with another 4 layers in the knees and butt.
This is the cloth layout for Arctic Armor. With it's unique Insultex insulation and the special membrane, it not only serves as rainwear by being completely waterproof, it also breathes. Much like that famous G stuff everybody used to talk about as being great but cost an arm and a leg. This new membrane stuff is pretty doggone good these days and I think it actually breathes better than the old name-brand product. |

A REALLY exceptional thing about Arctic Armor suits lies in the Insultex. Not only does it provide great insulation with very low bulk, it also FLOATS! An Arctic Armor suit should never be used as a personal flotation device, but it really doesn't hurt to be wearing a suit that will float up to...750 lbs....!!!!! If you do happen to be on ice and have a mishap you will still be running a GREAT risk of dying from hypothermia, but at least you will floating. Floating is half the battle. The remaining battle which is getting back onto firm ice and then finding a working heat source - in a short amount of time - still could very easily kill you. So don't go running around out there proving to your drunken (or crazy) buddies, or worse yet, your inexperienced, drunken (or crazy), buddies who grew up in the cities, just how great Arctic Armor performs in life-threatening situations. People have already tested this out, it does float - they wouldn't dare advertise something this critical if it did not float. Just live with that knowledge tucked away in the back of your head and follow my advice to forgo the private testing. From an unforeseen, emergency standpoint, you may be better off in Arctic Armor depending on where you are going to be. Thin ice is WAY less fun that it sounds.

Additional note: When comparing to Ice Armor X Suits, here's an interesting, albeit it somewhat odd, comparison. A Lake County deputy sheriff stopped in to try on extreme weather suits that he could use while on the job due to our very remote location and fairly extreme temperatures (Dec. 2008 was mostly -10 to -29 below the whole month here - none of that fairy windchill crap the Minneapolis crowd is always so proud to talk about either. We have actual cold temperatures that one can read on real thermometers up here.) When putting on the Ice Armor X parka over his gunbelt complete with 2 way radio, taser, handcuffs, spare bullets, leatherman tool and small flashlight, the Ice Armor X Parka (grey/black)was very hard to zip shut. The Arctic Armor parka, on the other hand, zipped up easily and concealed the entire belt to the point where if he walked in, anybody would have though he was just a big guy in a red and black suit. Also, he and I both prefer the AA red/black or AA camo suits with the slippery, quilted nylon inside. MUCH easier to put on over clothing with the same insulation and everything else as the AA Plus suit. The legs of Arctic Armor tend to run a bit on the skinny side and the shiny nylon makes pulling them over clothing faster and easier. The AA Plus suits have the cuddly (and more "grippy" inside) micro-fleece-type lining (still same Insultex insulation). You have to squirm around in these to smooth out the inner wrinkles when it meets up with your clothing underneath. If you are wearing a corduroy shirt, forget it. Still, the AA Plus suit remains our best selling suit and customers who get them, really seem to like them a lot. Hope all these comparisons help! -JB- |
